Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world’s busiest airport for the past 18 years at the time of the project, has also distinguished itself with its impressive illumination. As ATL has experienced a steady growth in passenger numbers, becoming the first airport to process 100 million passengers in a year, it necessitated significant expansions and enhancements to its Airfield Lighting System.
These developments have involved installing a substantial number of electrical wires underground. However, a challenge arose as the newly installed live wires shared space in electrical manholes with inactive or abandoned wires. Recognizing the importance of addressing this issue, the airport assessed and devised a solution to document the electrical wiring layout accurately.
KEY led the effort of data collection in the field and passed that on to the other Joint venture members for processing into the CADD and underground utilities layout. The project is also instrumental in developing the proper nomenclature for circuit designation in the Airfield that complies with FAA circulars.
